Turn Obstacles into Opportunities
Obstacles can either defeat us or cause us to fight even harder. Which will you choose?
Many obstacles melt away when we make up our minds to walk boldly through them. I have faced many obstacles in my life and honestly I would not be who I am today without them. They have made me stronger and wiser, and have helped me to handle disappointments a lot better. Yes, you will not win every show, you might lose your job, break up with a boyfriend, go through a divorce or develop health issues…. but does that mean you should roll over and give up?
My obstacles in my life stem from childhood when my dad left. I could have chosen to be a victim of a poor single parent childhood, instead I chose to challenge the obstacles of that life and pursue sports, college, opening up my own business and becoming a name and face in fitness. Some of the behavior from being raised without a dad rolled over into my adulthood and has been challenging in some of my relationships. To be completely honest, I either sabotaged a relationship or became involved with someone completely wrong for me. Maybe because deep inside I didn’t want it to work out and I didn’t trust completely that they wouldn’t leave one day. I no longer live like that because like mentioned before: obstacles in life change us and make us stronger and wiser. What were once obstacles are no longer and whoever comes into my life I will know how to love and give whole-heartedly, letting myself be vulnerable.
Other obstacles have been poor body image and feeling not good enough. Whether I am competing or modeling. I always felt I was never lean enough and that my body wasn’t as good as anyone else’s. Being judged subjectively played a toll on my body image and soon developed this sort of body dysmorphia…in which I hated my body when I wasn’t dieting. The mental obstacles I faced with that and the realization that I actually inspire people because I am so real helped me to accept my body. We are all unique in our own way, I still work hard to be healthy and look a certain way but I am done with the self-degradation and negative thoughts about myself.
My last obstacle that I am going to speak about is some of the current issues I have been experiencing the last year. I have hypothyroidism and polycystic ovarian syndrome; both make it difficult to lose weight as well as extremely tired. Luckily my diet and lifestyle keeps me from gaining lots of weight but I still struggle with it. Sometimes I feel like I just want to give up, but honestly it wouldn’t be in my character to give up. Working with my doctors and following a regiment for me I am choosing to fight and continue to be positive.
We all have choices in life. We can wake up each morning wanting to conquer the day, or we can choose to be unhappy and bitter at what life throws at us. It is such a better feeling when we choose the positive…. “There are plenty of obstacles in your path, don’t allow you to be one of them.”
