Put Yourself First

My name is Holly Powell, and I am a wife, mother, NPC athlete and Executive Assistant. This is my first blog with M&F Hers and I am excited to inspire you to be at your best!

Life is all about having balance, and I will begin this journey by sharing with you a look into my life. It’s a world that encompasses fitness, a career, kids, and many ups and downs, some that will make you laugh, smile and most importantly, get you moving!

When people hear that I compete, they always look at me and ask, “How do you do it?” To be perfectly honest, I have asked myself the same question many, many times. For all you working moms out there, I’m sure you can relate when I say I don’t think…I just go! I rarely take time to think about everything I do in a day, because that would take time that I don’t have to spare. I have been a faithful gym goer for over 20 years now, and I have competed for the past nine. I worked out through two pregnancies and I couldn’t image my life without the iron. I knew from the moment I lifted my first weight that this was my passion, my fountain of youth, and I absolutely feel in love with the gym.

Fitness gives me balance. It helps me feel like I have control of at least one small fraction of my life, because we have all heard and experienced the phrase: “expect the unexpected.” Life has tested me, challenged me and I know 100% that when I have my health, I am on the top of my game… and you can be too! It certainly doesn’t mean you have to compete, but simply start by adding fitness into your life with a goal in mind. I can’t stress how important having goals are. Believe me, having something to look forward to will help you take the steps necessary for a healthier future. Pick a goal, write it down, and visualize it every day!

Obtaining your fitness goals must include proper nutrition along with an exercise schedule. (I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times, but this is so important.) Having your food prepped and your fitness schedule planned around work, and your kids’ activities will keep you in a good place and feeling like you can conquer the world. It is not easy, and you should know ahead of time it will take 100% effort because juggling it all can take its toll. But the rewards of feeling great about your health, your body and your fitness, is well worth all the sacrifices.

I believe many moms feel guilty about taking time out of the day for themselves. Let’s face it, when you have kids, they become number one and you end up last on your list… behind work, grocery shopping, laundry, homework, and even the dog. It shouldn’t be that way, and I am here to tell you that taking one hour out of the day to put your health and fitness into action should be an important goal from the minute you wake up. How you feel about yourself trickles down to everyone around you, and once you start to see and feel the rewards of your efforts, it will touch everyone in your life. You will become a role model for your children and an inspiration for other moms.

So plan ahead, work on creating your own fitness balance, and success will most certainly follow!

In good health,

Holly Powell
