Finding the Right Gym Environment for You

Does it matter where you get your workout in? Well, yes and no. No it doesn't matter in a sense that you can get a good workout in anywhere if you set your mind to it. This is an essential skill especially when you travel and can't always have all the equipment that you are used to at your home gym. But are there ways to improve your results by making sure that your regular training environment is right? Absolutely!
If you are just starting to exercise you will probably be comfortable in a different environment than if you are an experienced fitness enthusiast. The key is to find an environment that you thrive in. A place that gets you excited to go to. A place that makes you want to push yourself past your limits. Your gym environment should motivate you to exercise, not make you feel like you're standing in an operating room, and you shouldn't touch anything. At the same time you want to feel comfortable, but not so relaxed that you have no desire to do any exercise. You need to find a gym with a healthy balance between the two.
A big part of what can make the training environment motivating is the types of people that you are surrounded by while working out. For me personally, I love to train intense and it makes me push myself even harder when I see others around me pushing themselves past the comfort zone. On the other hand when I train in gyms or places where everyone around me is more focused on talking or resting than the actual training, I have to push extra hard mentally to make myself stay on a more intense level than anyone else.
Another thing that factors in is the equipment. If you have the opportunity, go try a gym or a training center that is completely different from what you are used to and see how you like training with different equipment like tires for pulling with a chain, big tires for flipping and weighted sleds for pushing. Not only does adding variety into your workout routine help you see new and faster results but it can also help you get more excited to get to the gym since you have something new to look forward to.
Lastly, don't be afraid to ask questions, and ask for help to get the most from your regular gym visits. When you get to a new gym, ask what kind of personal training services they have. Personal trainers can point you to the right equipment with the right kind of exercise plan to meet your goals. Remember, the people who work at the gym are there to help you meet your goals.
My favorite place to train is Armbrust Pro Gym. It is not a fancy club and that's what I love about it. I can go hard, sweat, grunt if I want to and feel uplifted by the other athletes training there. A lot of the equipment is different from most commercial gyms so I can always find good variety to keep things fresh and my body guessing what’s next.
