In the July/August 2010 issue of M&F HERS (on newsstands through Aug. 30) we featured an article titled “Crossing Over,” written by reigning Fitness Olympia champion Adela Garcia. In the article, Adela detailed her gutsy one-night journey into the world of CrossFit. (If you don’t know, CrossFit is a hugely popular, always-changing workout system that incorporates a wide number of physical challenges in a high-intensity environment designed to keep your body constantly guessing.) Adela doing CrossFit is kind of like a NASCAR driver attempting the Baja 500: Sure, they’re both driving, but boy are they different.

Adela left behind a bucket of sweat on the floor of Valley Crossfit in Sherman Oaks, California, but her dignity remained intact. Although she “got her booty kicked,” as she described it, she made a very respectable showing for a first-timer.

What we didn’t know at the time was that Valley CrossFit is an absolute shark tank of female CrossFit competitors. At the recent 2010 CrossFit Games held at the Home Depot Center Sports Complex in Carson, California, Becca Voigt, who partnered with Adela in our story, took seventh overall; and Kristan Clever, who also participated in the workout with Adela, was the overall female winner. This was a worldwide competition with sectional and regional qualifiers, which means we threw Adela in with two of the best female CrossFit athletes in the world!

To Kristan and Becca, we’d like to offer our congratulations for such epic performances.

To Valley CrossFit, thank you for graciously hosting this athletic experiment.

And to Adela …we had no idea what we were doing to you! We swear!

Below is a link to the full version of Adela’s CrossFit adventure. Becca and Kristan are both pictured in the story.
