When picturing the quintessential artist’s studio, the sights and sounds of a gym—weights clanging, treadmills humming, towels moist with sweat—are probably not the first images that spring to mind.

Yet, in many ways, the pursuit of higher fitness levels and a better body is indeed an extremely imaginative goal. In fact, you could argue we all work with the ultimate canvas in existence, the ever-magnificent, mysterious, and malleable human body.

In that context, then, it’s not jarring when 34-year-old Serbian beauty Jelena Abbou waxes philosophic about the more artistic aspects of her approach to weights. “I love to use a lot of different tools, exercises, and techniques when I work out,” she says. “I follow what you could consider a creative method.”
