2013 IFBB New York Pro Women's Preview
The 2013 IFBB NY Pro is almost here and the women are coming out to represent! Here, IFBB pro Angelica Nebbia gives you a preview of what to expect at the show this weekend.
Bev Francis and Steve Weinberger are known in the bodybuilding industry for “doing big things,” and the annual IFBB NY Pro Championship is no exception. Year after year, the competitors and fans come out in record numbers to witness the most dynamic competition in the Big Apple… and 2013 is proving to be the largest yet! With just a few days to go until the sold out 2013 IFBB New York Pro Championships on May 25th, it looks like Saturday night in Tribeca will be quite the ladies’ night. The competitor list is up on the IFBBPro.com website and the women of the IFBB are coming out to battle in NYC. As of today, May 23rd, 136 IFBB pro competitors in have signed up to give it their all on this legendary stage… and more than half of the competitor lineup (74 to be exact) will be comprised of the ladies!
Thirty women will be stepping on stage to compete in Women’s Physique, making it easily the largest division in the show. This division may be fairly new (it started in the NPC in 2010 and the IFBB Pro League in 2012) but it has taken off like wildfire, providing a much needed category for women who were deemed “too big” for Figure and “too small” for Bodybuilding. Last year’s winner of the NY Pro, Juliana Malacarne, will be defending her title against 29 others. Although she has been deemed by many as having the “perfect physique for WP,” Juliana will need to bring her best package to date in a line up of this magnitude, which includes WP champion Karina Nacimento. Karina has quickly made a name for herself in WP by placing 1st in three of the four competitions that she has participated in since she switched division from Figure last year. Last year’s NY Pro WP runner-up, Teresita Morales, will also be competing again, trying to move her way up to that 1st place, Olympia qualifying spot.
The figure line up consists of 22 competitors; some looking to make a splash with their pro debut, some coming back from last year in an effort to move up the ranks in this prestigious competition, and of course last year’s defending NY Pro Figure champion, Candice Keene. Candice has been hard at work making a name for herself in Figure, with 13 top five placements since early 2011, including 1st place at the 2013 Australian Pro, and of course the 2013 Ms. Figure International title. An addition to the Figure lineup that surprised some, is none other than Nicole Wilkins. Although she isn’t new to the Tribeca stage, Nicole hasn’t participated in the NY Pro since 2009, when she took home the 1st place trophy. Wilkins has a long history of 1st and 2nd place finishes dating back to 2007 when she earned her Pro Card in Fitness, including Ms. Figure Olympia ’09, Ms. Figure International ’10, Ms. Figure International ’11, Ms. Figure Olympia ’11, 1st place in the 2011, Sheru Classic, and Ms. Figure International ’12. Nicole finished out the rest of 2012 with three 2nd place finishes, so she’s going to be on a mission to add a 2013 1st place title to her resume. Also competing on Saturday is Monica Specking, who took home the 4th place ranking at the 2012 NY Pro, and who will be looking to move up to a coveted top three spot this year.
Rounding out the women’s classes (no pun intended) is the Bikini division, which also boasts 22 competitors. One to certainly keep an eye on is Yeshaira Robles who had a string of top five placements in 2012 and 2013, with the most recent being a 9th place finish and the 2012 Bikini Olympia and 1st place at the 2013 Pittsburgh Pro just a few weeks ago (which has already earned a spot at this year’s Bikini Olympia). Ashley Kaltwasser is hot on her heels after coming in 2nd to Yeshaira at the 2013 Pittsburgh Pro. Ashley also placed 2nd at the 2013 Europa Show of Champions and had a 1st place finish at the 2013 IFBB Powerhouse Classic, securing herself a spot at the 2013 Bikini Olympia as well. Dayna Maleton will also be coming out to compete on this familiar stage. Dayna earned a spot at last year’s Bikini Olympia and although she took home a ranking of 16th, five 3rd and 4th place finishes earlier in 2012 have definitely earned her some well-deserved recognition in the Bikini division, where she’ll be looking to add to her growing list of high-ranking placements.
So hold on to your sold out, 2013 IFBB New York Pro Championship seats, this is going to be a show to remember! And remember to check back over the weekend for interviews, pre-judging play-by-plays, photos, results and more!
