Q: I take 3 grams of fish oil daily. I also consume about 8 ounces of salmon twice a week. Can I skip my fish oil supplements on the days I eat salmon?

A: Most brands of fish oil supplements have about 0.5 gram of omega-3 fats per 1 gram. That means you’re consuming a total of about 1.5 g of omega-3 fats per day in supplement form. Most types of salmon have about 1 gram of omega-3 fats per 3 ounces. Since you’re eating 8 ounces of salmon on the days you're eating actual fish, you’re getting almost 3 gram of omega-3s. That's almost twice the amount of omega-3 fats you’re getting from supplements. So yes, feel free to skip your fish oil supplements on the days you’re eating salmon, as you're already getting ample amounts of essential omega-3 fats from the fish.
